Guard Your Heart

The long term value of guarding my heart came to me when my daughter was a late teenager.  She explained to me that she noticed, as she was growing up, that I would look away from the TV when sexual images came on, such as bra commercials.  She told me that it was one of her tests when she would be around a guy--to see what he did when bra commercials came on the TV.  I was so thankful for every time I looked away from an image that was provocative.

The heart, in the Bible is the center of who I am.  It is my emotions and my mind.  It seems to be close to the concept of the soul.  I want to have my heart be in an environment where it can flourish and grow and thrive.

Guarding my heart has been an important theme in my life.

At first glance guarding my heart is not fulfilling.  Face it, sin is fun in the short run.  Guarding my heart goes against what my mind and emotions want.  My body wants the sexual input.  But, long term, good decisions make for an extremely satisfying life.

Guarding my heart is more than guarding against negative input, but it is more importantly about putting good things in my heart.  My heart is precious, and I need to put in things which will make me a better man--and someone more in love with Jesus Christ as the years go by.

Following is a Bible study on the heart.  I hope you enjoy it, and hope it motivates you to keep growing spiritually.  I love going back to these basics in my own life, because it reminds me of the essentials in my own faith.
