Reality Check Crisis or chronic problem Sometimes reality comes as a shock or a crisis. There are some things we can change, and some we cannot. These are general principles we have found helpful.
Aside from a crisis or a chronic problem, we need to take stock of our present reality. We must simply look at where we are – the positive and the negative. It’s a time to celebrate the things that are going well, or make some midcourse corrections, or it may be a time to mourn some lost opportunities or disappointments. Many times we are too busy or too afraid to take stock in various categories of our lives. Tonight we are going to give you an opportunity to sit together and look at some of the realities of your life. We know that this will not be enough time to talk about everything you want to discuss. We really encourage you to try to get away with each other one or two times a year to take stock and discuss together how things are going in various areas of your life. Bob and I try to get away for at least one weekend a year for this purpose. We have gone to fancy places, and we have done it the penny pinching route but we have always included fun along with our serious talks. Go out for a nice dinner, include some sightseeing, or other form of entertainment you both enjoy. Definitely no kids. See if you can find another family to watch your kids while you go away, and return the favor. On the back of your discussion questions, you’ll see a list of 11 possible topics you could talk about on a weekend away. We suggest you address only one on a weekend. If you feel you need to address more than one urgently, try taking a long date to discuss another area as you need to. We’re doing to give you time to talk with each other now. Just look at the discussion questions for tonight and don’t worry about the weekend getaway stuff.
