Discipleship I have been involved with discipleship my whole adult life in one form or another. At it's core discipleship is bringing a person along side of you and building into their lives in such a way that they become self-starters, spiritually, and can have an impact on those around them and on their world. Discipleship is about Jesus. To be a disciple is to take in Jesus--to not only know him as our Savior, but to have every decision in our life be energized and empowered by him; to have our heart be saturated by love for him, to be motivated by his love for the whole world, to have our priorities be guided by his great heart of compassion for the lost and hurting. Discipleship is about dependence. We are dependent on God to give us both the will and the ability to do the right thing. If we try to be disciples of Christ in our own human power we will fail miserably. If, however, we recognize our own weakness, and depend on God for the strength to be his disciple we will be successful. Discipleship is about content. There is spiritual information that has to be passed from one generation to another. Ultimately we have received content from all the generations before us, some good and some bad. Our role is to carry that content to the next generation, hopefully making it as pure as is possible for spiritually flawed people. God is amazingly patient with our feeble efforts. Discipleship is about living. Discipleship without action is not discipleship. Living the Christian life in many ways is like any other skill. We become disciples through trying certain life skills. We make mistakes. We hopefully learn from them. We try again. I love a definition I heard about success. I do not know who said this but it stuck with me, "Success is moving from failure to failure without loosing enthusiasm."
