Confession When I Have Sinned

If you have sinned, there is a wonderful promise:

I Jn 1:8-9
8          If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9          If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NAS)

What does it mean to confess our sin?

It means we say the same thing about our sin that Christ does.  We must agree with God that the sin is wrong, that we must stop, and agree that it is covered by the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross.

True confession involves a change in our attitude toward the sin--to hate, rather than love the sin. True confession also will bring a change in behavior. If I have truly confessed I will act differently in the future.

What does it mean to be cleansed?

We are pronounced “Not Guilty” by God.  When God looks at us he does not see our sin.

How complete is the cleansing from sin when we confess?

Our heart is completely clean after confession.  It does not go back to a dull gray, but is as white as a bleached sheet.
